Adventures and Activities: From Crescent Moon Cabins, Dominica

Boiling Lake Hike & Valley of Desolation:
Truly a natural wonder and recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a steady climb through rainforest to 3,000 feet brings you to a look out point with panoramic views of both coasts of the island.  Descent into the Valley of Desolation with its spouting fumaroles and sulphuric waters as they wind their way around the Boiling Lake. Treat yourself to s soak in the hot springs along the way back. You will need a local guide and we have one of the best for all levels of experience. The level of difficulty is moderate with some rough stretches. The whole trip is approximately six hours and there is always time for a swim through the cavernous Titou Gorge.

Carib Territory:
Nestled deep within the forest and coastline of the Crayfish-River valley, the Kalinago Barana Autê, complete with structures inspired by Kalinago architecture, will offer guests a doorway into the culture of the Kalinago people. Demonstration by artisans, traditional canoe building, story telling via cultural performances and interaction with the people of the Carib Territory will contribute to the unique experience visitors in the Kalinago Barana.

East Coast Tour & Victoria Falls Hike:
A gentle morning of sightseeing can be had as you wind through the mass of undisturbed interior and onto the black sandy shores of the East Coast. You will experience the smells of fresh bay oil expressed from the many essential oil distilleries along the way as you near the village of Delices. Here you will find yet another impressive and pristine waterfall falling nearly 200 feet flowing with mystical and therapeutic milky waters of the White River. It is then a two hour round trip river walk to Victoria Falls with countless surreal basins for bathing along the way. Finally, climb the boulders up to the falls and swim in the therapeutic pool under the thunderous waterfall!

Emerald Pool:
This small basin, in a lush green setting, at the foot of a gentle waterfall, can be reached after a five minute walk through a rainforest of ferns and foliage. It is located in the center of the island (on the road to Castle Bruce). Take your swimming gear but be warned - it's a little cold in the pool! It's been featured in several movies and has also been used as a place to be married at.

Freshwater and Boeri Lakes:
Experience the remains of a volcanic crater and the highest mountain lakes in Dominica. The drive to Freshwater Lake is a scenic climb exposing glorious vistas of coastal and interior Dominica. Only a short drive beyond there you will come to the trail head for Boeri Lake. A two hour (round trip) walk will bring you to a pristine and secluded water basin, named after the calabash, for a refreshing swim.

Jaco Flats:
An excellent hike to where Maroons (escaped slaves) had a base and cut a deep trail and impressive steps down a cliff to the river. The walk takes approximately 3 hours and starts in Belles (which is on the Trans-insular road from Roseau to Marigot). Partly along a ridge above the river, partly through the river itself, take your swimming costume as there are some excellent places to swim.

Mero Beach:
This pretty stretch of sand in a secluded setting is strategically located on the southwestern coast. Although Dominica has some more secluded beaches then Mero, the natural beauty, personality and other attributes available at this location could be what you are looking for.

Middleham Falls:
The trail we prefer begins from Crescent Moon Cabins and, after a brief pass through an old coffee plantation you are immediately surrounded by towering tropical trees. A four hour (round trip) hike through Morne Trois Pitons National Park's luscious rainforest to a private 200 foot waterfall with bathing pools below. If you prefer a shorter approach you can start the trail from the Cochrane side, a fifteen-minute drive from Crescent Moon and enjoy a hike just over two hours round trip.

Morne Diablotin & Syndicate Trail:
Experience the world's first new national park of the millennium, the Morne Diablotin National Park! For those who just have to climb the tallest mountain in the Eastern Caribbean, Mourne Diablotin is one of the finest examples of rainforest ecology and old growth forest. A five hour hike roundtrip will expose you to four different ecosystems and take you into the most concentrated area for Imperial and red-neck Amazon parrots. To climb the mountain we can arrange a forestry guide that is unforgettably informative.

The Syndicate Nature Trail is an alternative to the five hour hike and only one mile. It is an excellent educational trail with prime examples of Dominica's most impressive trees and parrot watching perches. There is also a nature center with instructive materials pertaining to the ecology. Check out the Syndicate Falls on your way out.

Rainforest Mushroom Farm Tour:
Come tour this unique organic agricultural diversification farm nestled in the rainforest of central Dominica, right in the Morne Trois Piton World Heritage Site. See parrots flying overhead, humming birds flitting from bloom to bloom and wild agoutis. Hear mountain whistlers calling, smell the scent of local herbs as you brush by. See beautiful bromeliads and exotic orchids high overhead nestled in the cleft of a tall tree. Owner guided tours show the mushroom growing process from start to finish - from the laboratory to the rainforest this is a fascinating tour.

River Tubing or Kayaking at Layou:
Float down the clear waters of the Layou River, the longest and largest of the 365 rivers of Dominica. Enjoying the stunning scenery as you glide downstream over moderate rapids and across clear river pools. Enjoy a local rum punch or fruit juice at the end of this thrilling ride.

Snorkel at Champagne Beach:
Champagne is an area in the Soufriere/Scottshead Marine Reserve where there are small volcanic fissures in the sea bed. These fissures release tiny, crystal-like bubbles into the water. Champagne is a haven for many tropical fish. This is a great chance to see underwater volcanic vents and numerous sea creatures. Keep an eye out for the green sea turtle!

Sari Sari Falls:
This is one of Dominica's most magnificent waterfalls. Located near the south east village of Laplaine the drive takes you on a lush and windy country road with picturesque vistas of mountains, rainforest and rivers. The hike begins through a banana field, descending steeply into the Sari Sari River Gorge under the canopy of the lush rainforest. The trail cris-crosss the river until the Sari Sari Falls appear before you but before you can claim the rejuvenating reward of a swim in the gorgeous pool at the base of the fall you need to scramble over a series of boulders. When you get there you will be truly experiencing one of the natural wonders of Dominica.

Spanny Falls:
The twin waterfalls, also known as Pennrice Falls, are located in the forested interior, south of the little village of Bells, on the Canefield-Melville Hall road. To get to the first fall (60 ft. high) it is a relatively easy 15 minute stroll through agricultural lands. Getting to the second falls is a little bit more difficult since you need to hike up a very steep but short hill into a river with some slippery rocks. This second fall is about 70 feet high and offers a deeper pool where you can have a refreshing swim.

Trafalgar Falls:
These famous twin waterfalls are a 20 minute drive from Roseau. A pleasant, short walk takes one from the Visitors Center to a good viewing platform; the more intrepid can continue on to swim in the refreshing waters of the smaller waterfall or find the hot springs of the tallest fall.

Wotton Waven Hotsprings:
This village at the end of the Roseau Valley is a scenic area with several fascinating features - bubbling pots of hot water, fumarloes, rivers, hiking and even a waterfall. Our favorite spot is "Ti Kwen Glo Cho"; an organic farm blessed with incredible amounts of amazing hot sulphur spring water and a cool fresh water spring and waterfall. Local bamboo has been used to pipe the hot sulphur water directly into some little hot-tubs. Get in, relax, and feel the stress disappear up into the clean fresh air. There is also a small sulphur mudbath bubbling away in one corner of the land and an amazing swimming pool filled with fresh flowing hot sulphur water. A perfect day/ afternoon / or night out with friend's and family.
